Welcome to Julek Neumann’s Website
My name is Julek Neumann.
I am a director, actor, writer, drama teacher, translator and journalist living in Prague and London.

I am always looking for theatrical adventure and this website (currently under construction) should provide some information about what I am up to currently, what I was up to in the past and what I will be up to in the future (if any).
I trained as an actor at the Drama Department of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (DAMU) and have been working in the theatre since 1975. I was performing with a small experimental group Theatre Ypsilon for the first ten years of my theatre career; I started translating plays in 1976; the first production I directed opened in 1978; and I started to write (some poetry and a couple of plays) at about the same time.
I left Czechoslovakia in 1984 and lived in Vienna the next four years. During that time I directed a play in Antwerp and worked as assistant director in several theatres in Austria and Germany. I also made my living as a stage hand, lighting and sound technician and stage manager.
In 1988 I moved to London to work for BBC World Service as Czech translator and journalist for some twenty years. During that time I kept directing for London Fringe while teaching and directing at several London-based drama schools. At the same time, thanks to political changes in the Czech Republic, I was able to renew my links with Czech theatres. I translated several plays for the National Theatre in Prague, and taught at DAMU and its Brno counterpart, JAMU.
Having left behind the cosy life at the BBC when the Czech Section of the World Service closed down in the early 2000s, I continued to direct in London and Vancouver. In 2007 I made Prague my main base again, and started to work with a range of professional theatres, as an actor (after almost 25 years), a director and a writer.
